Life Insurance Riders Worth Knowing

By Nizam Ali · 4 min read · October 2026

Riders add features to a policy for an extra fee. Learn which ones are useful and which to skip.

What a rider is

A rider is an optional add-on that changes a policy, usually for a small extra charge.

Accelerated death benefit

This lets you access part of the payout early if diagnosed with a terminal illness. It is often included free and can be genuinely helpful.

Waiver of premium

If you become disabled and cannot work, the insurer pays your premiums for you so the policy stays alive.

Child term rider

It adds small cover for your children, often cheaply, and may let them convert to their own policy later.

Return of premium

You get your premiums back if you outlive the term. It costs noticeably more, so compare it with simply investing the difference.

How to choose

Ask what each rider costs per year, then decide if the benefit justifies it for your situation.
